  • Formatting is the process of creating new file system to store data, applications etc. Before installing Operating system on hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted. Partitioning is a process of logically dividing entire hard disk into one or more sections. Generally, formatting creates file system and directory to store location of all the files that you save to your hard drive. If you are installing a new hard drive, which is not preformatted then you need to format it to store data. In order to convert from one file system to another you need to reformat the drive which will format your existing partition and then change the file system to the new file system.

Generally, there are 2 different ways to format a partition on Windows Operating system i.e,

    • Using DOS FORMAT command from DOS command prompt. For instance, if you want to format D drive then you need to use FORMAT D: command.
    • Using Disk Management Utility to format the partitions for reuse. For instance, if you want to format D drive then right-click on the drive letter D and select Format Option.

Windows Operating system does not allow you to format bootable drive or partition using Disk Management Utility. If you want to format that drive then you need to use installation CD that allows you to format while installing new Operating system. Reformatting can also be done using installation CD or startup disks of your Operating systems.

Some of the scenarios in which partition are lost are described as follows:

    • Partition loss after re-installing Operating system: Most of the users avoid using single partition because of logical corruption. If that partition gets corrupted, the only solution is to reinstall the Operating system. Re-installation can be done using installation disks. While re-installing Operating system, it may wipe your hard disk. If you have not taken backup before re-installing the Operating system then you may lose data from the partitions. However you can get back hard drive partition on Windows using a good partition recovery tool.
    • Accidentally formatting while installing multiple Operating systems: You can install multiple Operating systems on a single hard drive. Each partition can have single Operating system. While installing another Operating system using installation disk, it asks for the location to install new Operating system and before installing it to format selected partition. If you select wrong partition that contains important data or old Operating system instead of empty partition then the data present on that partition get deleted resulting in data loss.

Generally, when you format the hard drive or partition, the data stored on that partition is not deleted permanently. Instead, only links pointing to that data gets destroyed making that space available for storing new data. You can rescue lost data using proficient recovery tool.

You should not store or copy new data to affected hard drive to avoid permanent data loss. Because, storing new data may overwrite old data resulting in permanent data loss beyond the recovery. Always, take backup before re-installing the Operating system. Hard Drive Recovery Software has an ability to get back hard drive on Windows 7, Vista, XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008 at your fingertips. This software can also recover lost data from non-booting drives and inaccessible partitions. If the partitions have been accidentally formatted during re-installing Windows OS then also you can use this software to recover lost data from those partitions. This software supports recovery of lost data from Fat16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5 and ExFAT formatted partitions. If your hard drive is having bad sectors then it will create disk image of that drive and recovers data from that disk image. In addition, it is also possible for you to rescue data from crashed computer hard drive due to some logical hard drive failures in just couple of minutes. You can also use this software to perform hard drive file recovery from Dell Laptop.
